The combination of shirt and tie hold an important place in men's clothing. They depend on many factors, like, the occasion, your physique, the ongoing fashion trends, etc.
But then, there can be different combinations that look good for the same occasion and given physique. Actually, you can go for anything that you are comfortable with, however, the basic rules of men's fashion have to be followed in any case.
There is added confusion when you are wearing a suit, as for different colors of suits, different combinations of shirts and ties have to be chosen. So, how does one select the perfect shirt and tie combination that goes with the suit, suits the occasion, favors his physique, is fashion favorable, and comfortable at the same time? Let's find out.

Selection Tips

  • If you are wearing a checked or a striped shirt, a tie matching one of the major colors would be the perfect choice. If you are wearing a gray shirt with black stripes, choosing a gray tie will be most appropriate.
  • Choose a tie with a pattern that is bigger in size as compared to the pattern on the shirt. If it has a larger pattern, choose a tie with a smaller pattern. In this case, try to keep the color combination neutral.
  • If you are using a striped shirt with a tie having stripes too, make sure the size of the stripes is not same.
  • Ties having bold patterns, like polka dots, should be used with a shirt that has a contrasting pattern. Such patterns should be worn to casual occasions, and certainly not to an interview.
  • If you have chosen a micro-check shirt, and want to wear a micro-check tie, make sure the shape of the checks on the shirt and the tie are different. The color of the tie should match with that of the suit or the shirt. But in no case, the shirt, the suit, and the tie should be of the same color.
  • If you are a fan of solid colors, try a solid color shirt with a contrasting color tie. A striped tie looks really good with a solid color shirt. However, at least one color on the tie should match with that of the shirt.

With Different Suits

Now let's see the different combinations of shirts and ties that you can use with different types of suits. The tips previously mentioned apply here as well, but with a few variations.

For a Black Suit

The best combination for a navy suit or a black suit is the white shirt and a black tie. It's the classic look and a personal favorite. The best part is that, for this combination, you have a numerous options for the color of the tie.
The only thing to remember is that, the shade of the tie should contrast well with your shirt and the suit. Do not use any bold pattern with this black suit white shirt combination. It is the best professional dress code color combination.

For a Gray Suit

Gray is another classic color. Blue, yellow, and pink shirts go well with a gray suit. Blue goes best with gray, and suits almost any kind of occasion. If the suit is a solid gray, then opt for a striped shirt. The tie can be striped or solid, and blue, black, or red in color.
Gray is not as serious a color as black, so a gray suit, and a pink or blue shirt, and a black tie can be a great semi-formal attire.
In the end, fashion is about being comfortable. So, whatever the combination, if you are not comfortable, or do not carry yourself with confidence, even the best outfit is going to look out-of-place.
